“Thanks, Doc” Poster

As it happens, March 3 was Doc’s birthday, so I wanted to let you know about the posters we had printed after his passing.

When I realized that we would be able to become a corporate sponsor of Merlefest I was delighted because I felt John and I owed Doc and Merle. You can see more about that in the “Short History”. At some time, during the festival, Doc’s good friend Dr. Jim Rousch would bring Doc to visit, which was always a highlight not only for me but for anyone coming through the Exhibitor’s Tent. In 2012, I’d bought a guitar from Wayne Henderson and brought it along to show Doc as I know he delighted in Wayne’s guitars.

That year, Doc came over during the set-up so that we were able to just sit together and talk. It was clear to me that he was not well. He was glad to try out the guitar, so I got it out for him. While he was playing, I took some pictures…of him, of him playing the guitar. And then I was struck by how small he appeared to my sight, and I was upset. So, I took pictures of just his hands. I didn’t take many, only 3 in total, and only one was in focus.

When Doc passed, I decided to use that picture as a poster to express our appreciation for his love and support.

We’re offering the few that remain so don’t hesitate too long to order one. Our dear friend, Willard Gayheart who runs that Front Porch Gallery in Woodlawn, VA [just East of Galax] framed quite a few of them if you are interested.
