Colby™ Tailpiece for 5 String Banjo.

Early in the 20th Century New Jersey Classical Banjo Player & Builder FRED VAN EPS [1879 – 1960] designed several tailpieces for his banjo and for those he later produced [1937-1988].

An idea whose time has come… again!!

We are delighted by the success of this marvelous Colby™ Tailpiece and almost at the end of the first production run product.

A quick detail about the Colby™. It is not bent or cast but rather carved out of aircraft aluminum by a computer driven machine. And while handmade has a lovely ring to it, there is something about seeing a CNC machine attacking a rectangular piece of aluminum and having the basic shape of the tailpiece be the result!!! There is no less craftmanship at work here than if it had been done by hand. John Prosock Machine in Quakertown was the maker of all our metal products and we are very proud of both our products and John. John has since retired and, hopefully, we’ll be able to find another Machine shop to produce them.

We found we needed to be extend the length of the screw to accommodate more existing banjos. The New Longer Tailpieces have a 1-1/4″ screw length while the Originals had a 3/4″ screw length.

Another comment was the wish for another finish. The Original finish was a tumbled finish, as we were concerned that the bright aluminum would scratch and be unsightly and this finish would provide a foil for wear and tear.Of the three Tailpieces now available, we have both the Longer POLISHED Finish, as well as the new Longer Tailpiece with the Original Finish., At the moment, they will be available only as long as the inventory lasts.
